چکیده

Purpose This paper aims to report the first iteration on Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) Engineering Model altimeter named HELENA. HELENA is a Time of Flight (TOF) that provides time-tagged distances velocity measurements. The LIDAR can be used for support near asteroid navigation scientific information. design comprises two types technologies: microchip laser low noise sensor. synergies between these technologies enable developing compact instrument range measurements up 14 km. Spacecraft Navigation in Cluttered, Dynamic Environments Using 3D Lidar

Many new classes of deep-space and on-orbit missions require efficient navigation of environments having untracked dynamic obstacles. Space probes will need to autonomously identify and classify these objects for purposes of localization, collision avoidance, and identification of targets having high value (scientific or otherwise). In addition, lidar is becoming a key sensing tool for close pr...

Breadboard Model of a 3d Lidar Sensor for Real-time Pose Estimation of Spacecraft

Reliable relative navigation between two spacecraft is a critical element of future On Orbit Servicing (OOS) missions and space debris removal scenarios. Sensors are required that allow for accurate estimates of a target satellite’s relative position and attitude. Scanning LiDAR (Light RADAR, also Light Detection And Ranging) based sensors are capable of creating a three dimensional point cloud...

A sample design for globally consistent biomass estimation using lidar data from the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS)

UNLABELLED BACKGROUND Lidar height data collected by the Geosciences Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) from 2002 to 2008 has the potential to form the basis of a globally consistent sample-based inventory of forest biomass. GLAS lidar return data were collected globally in spatially discrete full waveform "shots," which have been shown to be strongly correlated with aboveground forest biomass. R...

Hardware in the Loop Performance Assessment of LIDAR-Based Spacecraft Pose Determination

In this paper an original, easy to reproduce, semi-analytic calibration approach is developed for hardware-in-the-loop performance assessment of pose determination algorithms processing point cloud data, collected by imaging a non-cooperative target with LIDARs. The laboratory setup includes a scanning LIDAR, a monocular camera, a scaled-replica of a satellite-like target, and a set of calibrat...

A Survey of LIDAR Technology and its Use in Spacecraft Relative Navigation

This paper provides a survey of modern LIght Detection And Ranging (LIDAR) sensors from a perspective of how they can be used for spacecraft relative navigation. In addition to LIDAR technology commonly used in space applications today (e.g. scanning, flash), this paper reviews emerging LIDAR technologies gaining traction in other non-aerospace fields. The discussion will include an overview of...
